What Is A2P 10DLC Compliance?
A2P 10DLC stands for Application-to-Person 10-Digit Long Code. It is the framework U.S. carriers use to manage business-to-consumer SMS and MMS traffic sent from standard 10-digit numbers.
A key requirement of A2P 10DLC compliance is registering your business and messaging campaigns. Registration gives carriers visibility into the sender, message content, and the purpose of customer communications.
Why Carrier Filtering Matters
Carrier filtering is the process by which mobile carriers identify and block suspicious or noncompliant text messages before they reach customers. Filters review registration status, message content, sending patterns, and customer engagement.
As carriers refine their filtering systems, businesses with poor messaging practices are more likely to face delivery issues. Common causes include sending from unregistered numbers, lacking customer consent, inconsistent campaign information, or high complaint and opt-out rates. Carriers also require clear opt-in processes, avoidance of off-hour messaging, and support for standard STOP and HELP keywords.
Enforcement has become significantly stricter. Since February 2025, major U.S. carriers have stopped throttling unregistered A2P traffic and now block it outright, with no grace period for unregistered messages.
